painting headboard

I have an old dark stained pine head board from when I was a kid. I want to paint it white for my daughter but I am not sure of the best way to do it. I was thinking of a scratch over with sandpaper and then prime and paint. Would that work? What would be the best type of paint oil based or latex? Also are there any good reasonable priced sprayers on the market to use with an air compressor? Thanks for your time! Dean

I would sand surface then prime with kilz or bin to prevent bleedthrough of stain. Then you can use either latex or oil.
