Question

painting gutters, painting a porch

I have some metal gutters that were painted 10-15 years ago, and the paint isn't peeling at all. I am painting the rest of my house, and I am wondering if I should paint my gutters too while I am at it. What will make the paint job on my gutters last the longest? Leaving them as is, or putting another coat on them (priming if necessary)?

I also have a tongue and groove front porch that is walked on every day. It also gets some rain and snow on it too. I need to replace all the wood, but what it is best coating for the wood to make it last as long as possible? I prefer the look of paint, but I am open to anything. Should I treat both sides of the wood?

I would paint them if they were painted before. As long as they aren't peeling, then no primer is needed.

Thanks. Would there be any harm in oil priming the gutters before I paint them?

Harm? No but why bother. If your last paint job lasted 10-15 years,I would use whatever you used before

If it were me ,I would skip the real wood and go with Trex or something close( no maintenance)

The person who painted these gutters did a mediocre job in parts, and in some places there is exposed metal. That's why I will probably prime them.

Are the gutters just dirty is why you are wanting to paint them or total color change?

Trex is good as a choice, but do not fall for the no maintenance garbage. There is a class action suit on them for claiming that and it turned out otherwise. You need to clean and seal your composite decks after they are installed and wash them every year. Every 2 years you need to seal them again.

As far as a protectant for your deck. Every deck should be stripped, pH balanced and I suggest Armstrong Clark oil based stains. I have had great results as a Collegeville Deck Washing company.

I'll look into the Trex stuff. Most of the front porches in my neighborhood are tongue and groove and most of the houses look like this:

So I'll have to make sure that the trex stuff stylistically fits. Most people paint their front porches around here too.
