Painting & glazing kitchen cabinets

Hello Bob,

I have read this thread and am about to redo my kitchen cabinets. I have read many blogs about how to accomplish this and was indeed going to paint them. We put Kilz on them and sanded them. Then was told to buy valspar paint. We are going to spray.

My question is based upon your comments about not using paint on cabinets. What is the best way for a DIYer to go about doing their cabinets?

I was going to do a creme color with glaze and on some a black antiqued look. You seem to really know what you are talking about. Please advise if you can.

Thanks,
BT

I have the cream colored with a grayish glaze. Black might look a little harsh. Whatever you choose, just do one cabinet and you can redo if you don't like.

BT,

If I were going to redo my cabinets I would 1) sand, 2) prime and 3) coat with a CABINET PAINT. VALSPAR IS NOT A CABINET PAINT. In fact, Valspar makes some of the worst paint for cabinets (and otherwise) on the market today.

A few paints perfect for cabinets on the market today are:

Ace Cabinet & Trim Paint
BM Waterborne Satin Impervo
BM AURA
Cabinet Coat by INSL-X

Basically, all of these paints are waterborne paints, meaning they share both oil-based and latex based properties in a single can. they look like a hardened oil paint but they clean up with soap and water.

These are superior paints for cabinets and trim painting. Most are satin or Semi-gloss...
