Painting gas fireplace

I'm painting the inside of my bas burning fireplace ( the firebox). What paint have others used for this? I've read that some people had bad experiences with paints giving off a fume when the fireplace was used after painting the firebox.

I'm putting in a gas "log" - actually just a gas burner covered with sand to distribute the flames and glass over that for a modern look. The flames will not be touching the firebox at all.

We are also refacing the wall with a modern tile. I'll post pictures soon.

Well it should not get too hot but to be safe I would use a high heat paint (and self-etching primer if the metal needs it). You can get engine enamels in black, white and of course colors.

Rustoleum and Krylon both make a high heat barbecue and radiator paint in black or white (and some deep colors) that should do the trick if that fits with the look you have in mind. I would mask off what you don't want painted and use rattle cans for this. You can buy high heat paint in liquid form too though.
