Clean the surfaces thoroughly then scruff with a fine grit sandpaper. Apply a bonding alkyd or acrylic latex primer/underlay. Follow with two coats of finish. You can put just about anything over an alkyd primer. It is probably best to put a latex/acrylic product over that type of primer.

Remember that latex/acrylic products can take 30 days to cure so try not to put anything too heavy on the tops. You can get acrylics in high gloss but generally only in lighter tinted colors or factory colors. You can have semi-gloss mixed to any color.

Depending on how big the furniture pieces, rattle cans can sometimes work out alright. Just remember that applying multiple even coats will give better results than trying to cover in one or two.

Proper prep is at least 90% of any paint job. Not willing to do it, paln on it failing and having to do it all over agin.
