Painting a Fire Hydrant

I am purchasing a fire hydrant to paint and personalize for my sister who is about to graduate from the local fire academy. I would like to place it on a stand (currently it has a pipe attached to it) paint it and add a persoanl touch, a message maybe. What is the best way to paint this? What process and type of paint? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Painting a Fire Hydrant

What kind of shape is it in now? (rusting, paint chipping, prime shape, etc.)

If this will likely go indoors, scrape off the loose paint, scuff sand, prime (oil-base bonding primer would probably be best), topcoat with the quality interior paint of your choice.
