Painting exterior window sashes

I don't often do these .
My main issue is what type of primer to use on the putty.do u recommend oil based or water based.I find that the weather really taxes the putty part, especially the bottom part of the frame.

give me a run down on how you paint them.
cheers.

Remove all loose glazing, prime with slow dry oil, replace glazing, let it skim over a couple days, prime again with slow dry oil, let dry onernight, apply 2 exterior topcoats of 100% acrylic.

Don't forget to clean the glass. Insert new or additional glazing clips if needed. Make sure it is an alkyd primer (solvent/oil-based) so the latex will stick. It is really important to prime before reglazing as Chris suggests. And try the glazing putty for caulking guns---especially if you have a lot of glazing to do. It really makes the job go faster.
