Painting doorknobs

I was going to replace all my European style doorknobs with oil rubbed bronze as an update from my current polished brass, when one of my customers said they had spray painted theirs. i looked at theirs and it looked great. I found the Rustoleum Universal Metallic spray can in oil rubbed bronze and gave it a try. I rubbed them with alcohol swabs to remove hand oils, and thoroughly rubbed them with a steel wool substitute pad to etch the surface. They came out great and matched my other oil rubbed bronze mirror frame, cabinet knobs, and light fixtures. The paint seems durable against the fingernail scratch test, and saved me a lot of money. Just thought I would pass this tip along for others.

Not a bad idea. I always like being reminded of options.

Painting doorknobs

I did the same thing on a switch plate cover a couple of years ago.
FWIW, it did look great, but it doesn't last forever. It is showing wear now.

A satin finish of clear coat might help.
