Painting Dividing Lights

I just added nine exterior windows that have those removable dividing lights on the interior. The dividing lights are pine and I put polyurethane on the side that faces the interior. I would like the side against the glass that faces the exterior to be white and have not had much luck painting them. I can't keep the paint on the flat face they are on. It runs around the edges and doesn;t coat well. Perhaps it doesn't want to stick to the polyurethane that ran down to the outside. I even tried a very thick exterior paint and got the same poor results. The previous owner did the same thing, painting the glass side and polyurethaning the side facing the room. She sprayed the white on. I am hesistant to try the same thing because she got alot of overspray. What is the best way to do this? Thanks

Spraying is the only way, unless you get some frog tape and meticulously tape them all off, very tedious indeed, but it can be done.

Would it make sense to use frog tape and spray?

You really should not need to tape if you spray them properly
