painting deck

We just bought a house and the deck needs painted because it has a weird green/blue color on the banisters, is there a paint that looks like wood that we can just paint over the top of that paint with?

Patty, Paint does not look like wood; it looks like paint. If the surface is a sound, paintable one, you have an issue of color. Cabot 1800 Series is a solid-color "Stain" that may work well for you. It comes in a wide choice of colors.

You need to find out what type finish is on the deck. You may not be able to just paint over the existing coat. You may have to strip, neutralize, allow to dry and then stain the deck properly. Have an expert look at it before you proceed.

Sounds like algae! light pressure washing with a bleach solution and then stain it.

If it's paint on the deck, you have a major issue. Paint is the worst product for a deck. It is not recommended for horizontal surfaces. The paint will peel in no time. Capt Randy is right.......if it's paint, you're gonna have to strip it off & that is no DIY job. Once stripped off, you will have to sand the surface down and STAIN it with a semi-transparent stain.

Right, but he said banisters and I think he is refering to the railings/spindles which are typically ok to paint even though I would still stain them if they were bare wood.
