Painting a bright wood stand to a darker color

I want to buy this wood stand and canopy. This is an old photo, Now the wood part is looking little old and no more shiny.

I should:
1-Use sandpaper to remove grit and pulish
I would use 120 grit paper to sand it. If it has polishes on it that may be a problem. Check to see if your sandpaper gets clogged, as it may be wax based.
2-Paint it with primer
I would a bonding primer. If you have to use a solvent to clean it in the previous step, use an oil primer, like Zinsser Cover Stain or such. If there's no solvent cleaning, use a latex primer.
3-paint with my desire color
Whatever your little heart desires.

4-apply varnish
You shouldn't need a clear coating. However, if you want some added protection you can use a latex poly.
Is it correct?

Is it possible? Does it going to be nice
How about if I want to make it shine again?
It should look great, if you're competent with the tools and procedure. You can use a gloss finish if you want the shine, and that should give more protection and sheen, eliminating the clear coating, which imo, isn't necessary.
