Painting a Banquet Table (Melamine Surface)

I would like to paint the melamine surface of a 6 ft. folding banquet table (see image below). It needs to be water-proof / resistant (ok, you caught me - it's for a beer pong table, but I'm classy, I swear!)

From the research I've done, it looks like I need to clean it, lightly sand it, prime, paint, then use some kind of polyurethane. I also want to put a decal sticker on it, do I put that on last - or before the polyurethane?

What products do you recommend? The surface of the table is melamine. I'll be buying these products from Home Depot, and hopefully on a fairly low budget.

Alternatively, do you think it would be easier to fit a piece of thin wood or something and glue it to the surface? And then paint on that?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Stencil

Instead of a decal I would say to use a stencil. I have done table-tops and even paneled floors and it was super easy and fun!

Preparing for the beer pong superbowl?
Apply the decal under the poly.

:jester:Thanks for the heads up Blondsense, didn't even notice the date. Duh. I wasn't even going to contribute but figured I had to make the joke about the beer pong superbowl. Figured it was probably a frat boy.
