painting around a chair rail

Hello,
I have white chair rail in my living room, didning room, and family room. I would really like to change the wall color. Do I need to remove the chair rail before I paint or can I just tape off the chair rail?

Faster, cheaper and less mess to just use a 2-1/2 quality sash brush and paint around it without the tape.
If I did tape it I would use 2" wide tape only on the top of it and do not press it down over the face of the rail. It will act as sort of a tent to prevent paint drips as your rolling the wall.
Along the bottom I'd skip the tape.
Reason being far to often the tape peels off the paint under it as your removing it making more work, It also almost never completly seals off the area or is miss aligned and you will not see the bad spots untill it's to late.
With the sash brush you can see what your doing as you go. If you get some paint on the rail you can just ripe it off and touch it up as you go.

Make sure you use a quality angled sash brush. Expect to pay $15-18 retail. With a bit of practice you will almost be able to pinstripe with the edge of it. It will last a long time if you take care of it. Purdy and Wooster are the brands I usually bought.

Now is the time to caulk---before you paint---as well if there are any gaps showing between the chair rail and wall.
