Painted sheetrock?

My wife and I just bought a home that was built in 1959. Needless to say, lots of wallpaper everywhere. I started taking the wallpaper down in the master bedroom and it appears as though it was wallpapered over what seems to be a wallboard w/ a pattern on it. Anyone know what this is? HOw should I deal with it? We want to just paint the walls, but as I try and remove this, it seems to be almost like sawdust underneath it. I'm worried it could be asbestos (mostly because I've heard that's bad/expensive and that tends to be my luck).

I don't have a clue what you have.........can you post some pictures?? Never seen wallboard with a "pattern". There is a product available with vinyl wallpaper already on it and it COULD have a pattern. I highly doubt it was available in '59 and it is installed with a filler strip between sheets rather than a smooth transition between the pieces............

This happens all the time, it was the sawdust thing that was really confusing.

Unless the backing paper and glue are deteriorating and leaving residue that looks like sawdust??

Painted sheetrock?

I remember rehab'ing a house in DC back in the 1970's...

Somebody had redone the walls and used the boards off of one of those big war table maps you see in the movies they push ships and tanks around on with sticks.

Any tanks in the design?

Yeah the house was only about six miles from Fort Fumble [ Ya'll probably call it the Pentagon] and I'm sure somebody scavenged the boards and used em to finish off a wall on a small additition.
