painted coffee table

my coffee table paint rubs off when I dust it or even just rub a dry rag over it. What can I put on it to keep this from happening.

Sure sounds like someone painted it without the proper prepping.
Anything you apply over it still would have nothing to keep it stuck on.

If you painted it with a regular latex paint, it may be sticky, which is called blocking. Provided that it has very good adhesion, applying a waterborne clear varnish can help. Cleaning a painted surface is done with a cellulose sponge and water, no abrasives or ammoniated cleaners. Most manufacturers recommend allowing the paint to cure for 30 days before cleaning.

Rubs off as in a little color , or are chunks of paint peeling off?
