I just moved into a house that has hurricane window covers. They are heavy vinyl and they attach to the bolts that are already in the outdoor wall around the windows. Problem is that the previous owner painted the bolts and now when I went to attach the covers using wing nuts, I could hardly get the wing nuts to turn on the painted bolts. Help...... this is hurricane season and we've already had one close call. I tried a wire brush and that helped some, I tried a rag soaked in paint remover but that didn't do a thing. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Take one of the wing nuts to any place that sells fasteners and find out what kind of a thread it is. Buy a die for that size of screw thread.
Running that die onto your bolts will cut the paint off the threads.
I realize it can be easy to mistread the die if the bolt threads are all caked up with paint. So, maybe just thread the die on with your fingers until you're confident that it's threaded on correctly before turning the die with a wrench or socket.
