Painted bath tub
The previous owner of my house painted the bathtub. I'm assuming they didn't do it properly because it's peeling on the bottom. I looked for paint removers at Menard's, but none seem to be safe to use on a bathtub. I can understand why they painted it because it's a terrible eggshell blue. Does anyone know the best way to remove the paint and how to repaint so it lasts longer?

Sarah, I am wondering if the previous owners may have actually had the tub refinished, not painted. If this is the case, removing the coating is not one recommended for the homeowner. Normally, a tub refinisher would give you a free estimate on removing the coating and refinishing the tub.

I recently checked to see what it would cost to refinish an old tub. The cost to refinish it was more that twice what I paid for a new Koehler tub.

I know the previous owner's parents. And they told me that the woman painted it without sanding it and may have not waited a appropriate time before using the tub again.

I suspect it was a paint to sell job
...which unfortunately leaves the new owner with a worse mess than an icky tub

I know of no good DIY way to re-coat tubs
The pros can do it well, but they use acid etching and tricky epoxies

The "kits" from The Home Depot seem to be pretty horrible, I've not heard of any lasting for more than a few months

The tub epoxies from the paint stores seem to last longer
But the directions must be followed to the letter...including all the prep and attention to the open and curing times
