paintable wallpaper

I recently had to remove the painted textured wallpaper from my stairway. I am going to apply textured paintable wallpaper again. Do I need to remove the backing that stayed on the wall or can I repaper right over top. cheryl

I love the look of embossed paintable wallpapers, they really do give character to a room and such and easy method to get such a fantastic look.
