paint and sheetrock mud.

Depends on the look you are after.................if you're texturing I usually add 1/2 to 1 gallon of white paint to my 5 gallon tub of joint compound. But, usually I DO NOT add any paint at all. I just paint the texture with flat white after it has dried for a week or two. To thin down joint compound for texturing, add enough water until you have the consistency of pancake batter.
