Paint over stain?

I have some older stained cabinets and was curious what kind of prep work I need to do in order to paint them? Can I just paint directly over the stain or do I have to scuff them?

Thanks in advance for your advise.

You will need to scuff them and use a bonding primer.

The search function on this site is not great, but I know there are multiple threads here outlying the procedure for painting stained cabinets.
