Paint over pokey textured wall

I'm going to be repainting my grandma's bedroom in a few weeks, and I'm trying to come up with a cute idea for the paint. The problem is that she's got that pokey texture on the walls, and I think that will make it difficult to do any striping or even a border without stripping off the actual paint.

Any ideas for doing something besides a basic one-color paint job?

Paint over pokey textured wall

A nice base coat of one color, and hitting the tops of the texture with another, or a glaze (faux) of some kind, might be interesting
