paint over mystery deck stain?

Hey all - it appears the preivous owner used solid deck stain on our deck. I'm doing a rehab job on it, and much will remain. So I'll have a mix of old boards and new boards. The old boards have this stain on them.

It's tan - and totally solid. A few places it's come up/off - and you see the grey/bear wood under it.

I have a paint gun - can I just shoot over whatever is there with new solid deck stain - or even exterior house paint?

Thanks!
Dan

paint over mystery deck stain?

#1 Soild stain never should have been used in the first place on the deck boards.
It would be fine on the railings.
Spraying will never apply enough thickness and your also going to be dealing with all the over spray.

paint over mystery deck stain?

I never liked using solid stains on decks but it happens and I remember claims that MABs product would hold up. I see that SW Deckscapes solid acrylic (not Woodscapes) stain is supposed to withstand deck conditions.

You don't really have a choice at this point other than to strip it off and use a semi-transparent or semi-solid after. I guess I would give a quality product like that from SW a try. You are never going to get but 1-3 years out of any solid deck stain, oil or acrylic though.

I would not spray it on.
