paint/ oil based poly ?
Hello
Im looking for some advice. We have been working on a project for sometime and would like to finish it up. So far everything that I have done looks great, Id like to keep it that away :) . Im ready to move on to the last steps of this porch project. The floor has been done with an exterior acrylic latex primer and paint. I have purchased Minwax oil based polyurethane clear gloss for the final touch. Is this a good choice or should I have gone with something more durable. Im no expert but I would appreciate some education on this matter before I begin . Thanks in advance |
What kind of floor?
Really I can't recommend using an exterior latex on a floor And/Or then topping that with a poly Usually it's best to use a floor paint, or floor poly |
your reply
Its wood and the exterior acrylic latex is specifically for exterior floors. Do you suggest I change the paint?

That's odd Well if it says it's for floors... Does it say anything about top coating with poly? To be straight, with wood floors, if it's going to be painted, then I do latex (or oil) enamel -over oil primer if bare wood Or, if it's to be stained or (as in most cases) left natural, then it's a few coats of quick drying floor poly (oil) The acrylic paint says it's for floors but is not meant to be a top-coat? What's the product? |
yep says 100%
Nope double checked it just to certain I was correct
It is McCloskey exterior acrylic latex paint / primer Would you recommend a brand of poly for this particular project Im some what confuse just a little bit anyways. Are you thinking I may have did this wrong? I hope not I would hate to have to start all over again. If I understand you correctly It should have been an oil based or enamel floor paint instead of the latex acrylic floor paint? Basically what I have down at the present time is the acrylic latex paint and primer all in one Should I redo this before proceeding any further or do you think it would work out ok to go ahead with the project? Thanks for your help I appreciate it |
hello
Well if it says it's for floors...
Does it say anything about top coating with poly? Have double checked that to and it says nothing about it |
I see
The paint didn't say it needed to be top-coated with poly, that was your idea Quote:
I would not recommend poly As for what I would use on a wood floor: Quote:

I'm not fond of many step-saver products, as IMO usually they suffer in another area But truly I can't speak for Mcloskey's It may work well I wouldn't recommend an acrylic, but if the product says it's for floors then maybe it will work OK As recoating with enamel, or poly, would require removal of the present finish, I'd say leave the Mcloskey's on and see how it does The labor is the same to remove the Mclosky's now, or in six months Why not leave it be and see how it holds up? |
