Paint off Brick Please Help!!!

I am trying to take paint off brick. I just bought the house in Garden City NY and the house was originally white washed after it was built in 1937. It was later painted a couple times, but I was able to get rid of the latex with power washing but the original white wash is more stubborn. Many people in the area sand blast the brick but I don't like how it damages the brick. If you can give me any advice I would be very grateful.
