Paint not sticking to ceiling -

Hi, my husband Tom is painting our livingroom ceiling, he scrapped off the stucco from the ceiling, after doing this he added a primer - but noticed the primer was not sticking - he rescrapped and added the primer again - after a few days it seemed to have worked, he is currently using a popcorn ceiling paint but has noticed the primer is peeling off again as he was painting. My husband is very well educated in home renovation so naturally he has tried everything. Can you please help us, as he is frustrated and at the end of his rope with this ceiling which has now taken him close to a week to paint. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some questions first....

1) What kind of ceiling is this? Lathe & Plaster or Sheetrock?
2) Is there an interior room above this, or the outer roof-rafters?
3) By "Stucco", do ya mean "Popcorn"-texture, or an actual Stucco?!
4) Age of home/ceiling?
5) Insulation level/thickness above?
6) EXACT primer used? Brand? Latex or Oil...?
7) Your state?

Hello to a friend from Canada!
(I haven't been to Canada for a while...Winnipeg in 2003 I think...and I live "next door" in ND! My DW grew up in a small ND town just miles from the border. I grew up in E-central ND)

Since there's a bathroom up-above, this MAY be a contributing factor...

Are your ceilings' problem-spots under where a tub/shower/toilet are located?
Or, are they widely scattered?

Rent or buy a moisture-meter, and check lots of areas. Take note of the locations and readings, especially under the bathroom.
Takes lots of readings where fixtures above are concentrated.

>>> A moisture issue has to be eliminated from the list first!
* The "prong-types" are best. Surface-readers can be good though, but are more $$.
* Sure, you'll be making lots of holes, but they're little and easy to fill.
* I have a hunch you've got something going-on with the bathroom.

Next- switch primers!!!
In your case, you'll need to get an oil primer. Zinsser's Cover-stain or Odorless-Oil would be good.

>>> This assumes moisture problems are fixed though!!!

Pour the Behr paint down the drain and buy some real paint.........Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.... Yeah we were afraid of this.... my husband is now not a really happy person since purchasing this house 4 years ago, it has been nothing but a nightware with problems. As we speak he is looking for the leaks and pulling off the ceiling drywall |(what a mess) .... He found the drain for the tub.... !!!!! It was the bathtub upstairs... the nails in the joints are all rusted .... he found the leak in the drain... Thank you very very much for your advise. Take care... This is going to be a long night...

OH MY!!!

Sounds like you may have one of those homes that should be on the "Mike Holmes" list!!?!?
Well, at least you guys are getting to the "root" of the problem...RIGHT AWAY!
Wow!

Also...take lotsa pics!! Both for your own use, and to show people here that can learn too! They may help for resale proof too, that things are fixed, etc.

Good luck and keep us posted!
