I have two steel garage doors which were originally white and painted with brown when the house was redone. The doors are on the southeast side of the house so they get more than half of the sun during the day.
By now the paint has started flaking off and I hope to get them redone this summer.
Should I prime the doors after I scrape and brush them? If so, what should I use? Rust-o-leum?
What kind of paint works best in this situation? Oil or latex? I know the advantages of using latex but I want this to be a one time deal that lasts a while.
With steel doors I like to play it safe and use oil-based paint. Latex can be used but there's a higher risk of producing rust from the water in the latex. Scrape and wire brush all the loose paint off. You can spot prime with a rusty metal primer and then apply one or two coats of Rustoleum or a Direct to Metal paint. Keep in mind that the oil based paints will produce a high gloss finish.
