Paint Bathroom Ceiling questions?

Hi I have several questions regarding painting of the bathroom ceiling. Sometime ago my mom got the bathroom repainted it's now an ugly light brown color including the room. Mildew has started to grow on the room I want to repaint it. Should I just wash the ceiling with diluted bleach, then paint it white using a bathroom/kitchen paint? Or should I rent a sander and sand off all the old paint from the ceiling then use something like zinsser cover stain and then paint over that? lastly should I just clean apply the primer and then the paint? Edit: Forgot to add not sure what the current paint is. I think it's latex but not sure

Clean with the bleach, prime with a good bonding primer( latex for me), cover stain will certainly work, but IMO is overkill, paint with you're bathroon paint.I would use these products.

Thanks, for the info I also have some cracks in the pain and wall. I should just scrape them away and then use Spackle on it right? I started scraping, but the cracks seem deeper then I thought. In one case when I think I scraped to far because I reached a wooden plank or something similar. How is bear premium paint? A friend suggested I use a primer and then the what ever color semi-gloss bear I want

Please, Stay away from Behr paint---It is a bad product--

Use the paint in Chrisn's picture--It is a joy to use.--M--

Ok I won't get Bear paint. I will probably be using cover stain, as the primer. If my local place doesn't have zinsser perma white what's a good alternative?

You will probably need to tape and mud the cracks.Use regular joint compound, not spackle. If you cannot find perma white use this
