paint banister with melamine?

Hi, I had planned on just sanding down our banister (currently is wood with stain) painting with primer and then white latex paint. A friend of mine suggested to do a light sand, then paint with melamine, then to paint with latex. We want a white finish. I've never painted with melamine, and he seems to think it'll save a lot of time because we'd only have to light sand rather than sanding right down to the wood. Any thoughts?

Why would you paint with melamine and topcoat with latex? Makes no sense to me.

Sand to 120. Prime with oil (zinsser cover stain will work) and paint with latex. Done.

Me either. Melamine has its place but not for your application. And it chips easily. I certainly would not paint over it with a latex acrylic. Once you use melamine you are more or less committed to it.

All that said, factory mixed white urethanes might be a possibility but they chip too. Some of the new nano finishes with silicon are nice but really expensive.

I would stick with nice Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams latex acrylic.

I painted my bathroom counter top with white melamine and want to repaint it...can anyone tell me what the procedure would be and specifically...because I used melamine, do I have to use it again? I don't like painting with melamine..its so thick.

I would lightly hand sand the railing, wipe it down, prime it with Sherwin Williams Bonding Primer, apply two coats of Sherwin Williams Pro Classc enamel
