Paining general question

I am brand new to this site. I am planning on buying my parents house in 2 months and don't really know a lot about painting. I figured this would be a good site to get some help. My first question is what is the best way to paint trim white? Currently all the moldings match the wall color but I want white trim.

Check to see what kind of paint is on that trim now. Take some nail polish remover (the regular kind, not the low-odor stuff) and clean a small area of the paint on the trim with the nail polish remover (in an inconspicuous area).

If the paint is a latex paint, the nail polish remover will dissolve the paint quickly, causing the area of the tissue that's pressed against the wall to quickly become the same colour as the wall. Oil based paints will gradually dissolve in acetone, but they take a lot longer. So, if the nail polish remover dissolves the paint rapidly, it's latex paint. If it dissolves it more slowly, it's oil based paint.

Also, is the existing paint on the trim kinda flat or kinda glossy?
