orange peel prevention?

I prime a lot of 1x poplar for prefabbed staircases. the boards are sanded to 80g and then the zinnser oil-based primer is applied with a 1/4" nap roller. After they dry they are sanded quickly with a DA orbital to get them a little smoother. Many times if the primer is applied too thick i will get an orange peel look which drives the finish painters crazy. For a quick fix I will just sand the primer a little bit extra until the surface is smooth. Is there any way to get a smoother finish without having to sand the heck out of them every time? Should i thin the paint..add penetrol?

orange peel prevention?

You could put in some additives to make it flow out better. Are you sure that the Zinnser is the best for flow and leveling? My other suggestion would be to use a microfiber roller instead of a standard nap.
