Is it ok to use a Flat Paint instead of Primer

We're finishing our basement and my wife and I both work from our home several days a week. We also have a bird and I have respiratory allergies.

Therefore we'd like to use the healthier paints with low-odor and zero VOCs.

We have decided to go with Sherwin Williams as they have a great sale on paints this weekend (40%). Unfortunately, their primer is not on sale and it's $40 per gallon for the cheapest "healthy" primer.

The store manager recommended that we prime with the Flat Paint of the cheaper "healthy" paint line which is HGTV and costs $22 and then add a top coat of the Harmony which is their premium "healthy" paint which is $33 on sale. Strangely, both are cheaper than the primer:-)

Can I use the real paint as the primer?

Thank you,

Paintbird

Primer and paint are not the same thing. Chemistry and purpose are different. You should use a primer and the store person should not have suggested using flat paint as a primer. Something like Zinser 123 is good stuff and may be cheaper than the SW primers.

And don't get too worked up about the VOCs in the waterbased primer you pick. I can rattle off a list of things in your home that effect air quality and your allergies, and outgas potential toxins much more than paint and primer.

I just found out that the primer is also on sale so I'll be using the healthy primer. Since the drywall has never been sealed or primed, I agree that a primer would be a better application than flat paint.

Thank you for your replies!!!

I am with sdsester, whenever possible use a primer on bare drywall, especially in a basement.
