oil based stain darker color
 

Is it necessary to remove the old stain color when going to a darker color of stain? Is roughing up the wood with sandpaper slightly enough, or does it need to be removed completely? Staining from a light walnut color to a dark red mahogany color.

The million dollar question is- i it just stained, or does it have a varnish finish over it?
