Question

Need ideas/tips to prep the ceiling surface for shower room

Hi all, thanks for reading this again.

I have a shower room that had some mildew, after I cleaned it with bleach, I used putty knife to get rid of the loose paint and currently it look like this:

I was trying to sand the surface but it's kind of hard to sand the ceiling using sand paper. Any other ideas or tips about better preping the surface before I put up the 1st coat of primer (Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3)? How much coat of primer do I need? After the primer I'm planning to put up Zinsser Perma White for mold/mildew prevention... Would one coat of Zinsser Perma White good enough?? Thought or comments? Thanks!

Skim with joint compound , sand smooth, clean the dust off, repeat as needed.
1, one coat primer
2 two finish coats

Anyone else notice the illegal light fixture in the shower area?
It needs to be replaced with a water tite shower fixture.

Thanks for the tips. As it's a tight space and it's the ceiling, I really had hard time to really sand it with a plain sandpaper. Is there any tool I can use (power sander, etc.?) that I should consider using to make the sanding process easier? Thoughts or comments? Thanks!

Maybe it's a temporary work light

Just a block sander by hand is all I use.

Good point Joe but I cannot tell from the pic. It almost looks to me like the fixture is fine but it has the wrong bulb in it. It should have a flush fitting flood if I am seeing it correctly. Good to point out it will cause problems in short order the way it is being used.

You going overboard on this? You want to sand your patches and if you laid them on too thick I guess you pay the piper. If you are just scruffing up the surface for adhesion you do not have to attack it so severely. Just add some tooth.

A pole sander can help working over your head but if you are up on the ladder anyhow and it is a small space? Just use a sanding block or one of the 3M sanding sponge things with the finer side, if it has two.

I just checked and noticed that Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is water-based primer-sealer (which I already purchased). What type of oil-based primer would people recommend? Thanks!
I can't really tell what kind of paint the current surface (ceiling) has...

Zinsser makes an oil base I think its in a gold labeled can. I have always had good luck with their primers. I always try to use oil in wet areas like kitchens and baths. Don't forget to clean up your tools after oil base you must use mineral spirits.

Then i don't think you have a choice but to go with a good quality latex primer and the zinsser you already have is one of the best imho
