Need cabinet repainting tips

I have a few extra old cabinets that I want to repaint and put in the laundry room. They are 40 yrs old and stained. Likely with oil based stains and top coats. My plan is to spray and use a Sherwin Williams oil enamel unless a water based paint is a better choice. Here are my questions.

1) How should I prep the surface? Sand everything down to bare wood? Just scuff it up?
2) Do I need to prime?

Any other tips?

You will not need to sand down to bare wood.
Clean with a TSP solution and prime them, or a solvent cleaner wipe down and scuff sand. Talk to your Sherwin Williams Sales person about a primer recommendation for your paint. Maybe something with a stain blocker.
My Sherwin Williams salesman is fantastic and I tend to really trust his suggestions.

You don't necessarily have to sand to bare wood. Do give it a good scuff sanding, clean with tsp, rinse well, let them dry, use SW bonding primer for glossy and varnished surfaces. A good bonding primer will adhere well to a surface that's been stained. Then apply your top coat.

If you can get it in your area, I would use an alkyd primer.
