My mini nightmare...

Went to replace a few pieces of siding and had rot so bad my corner was mostly gone, framing needed to be replaced, as well as the face plate to my flooring. Needless to say, I'm going to repaint one entire side of my house so it all matches up. I have SW primer and Superpaint. I usually just use my 5 in 1 and a putty knife, sponge clean, caulk, prime, and 2 coats of paint. The problem is, I usually end up spending an ungodly amount of time on this stuff (and entire weekend for about 10 sq feet).

Any pointers on how to speed up the prep time?? I have a paint sprayer now, which will help, but the prep time is killing me. Any tools to make life easier.

Not to be a wise ass, but from the sounds of your problem, the last thing you need is ways to shorten the prep time. A five in one is many things, but an official paint scraper it's not, and for that purpose is banned in my world. Have you figured out how the rot occurred and what caused it? Unless the problem can be attributed to a roof/gutter issue, that type of failure means a glitch in your paint system that is allowing moisture to get behind. Paint failure is the largest cause of wood rot, and human error is the single largest cause of paint failure. You may be spending a lot of time on prep, but are you doing what is required/proper in that time? Respectfully. Joe

Hi Joe,

Valid points for sure, but we actually just bought the place last year, and it was partially a roof issue and partially gutters (installed diverters in the roof, hopefully that fixes it).

I'm not trying to cut corners prepping for paint, just trying to be more efficient. I've spent countless hours researching, but want advice from the pros. Thanks in advance!

There are no shortcuts in prep.It is more important than the actual paint.

Fair enough Jett. When you say you installed diverters on the roof, in your case, what does that mean? What problem did you have that required them? That's the downspout corner isn't it?

The downspout doesn't do all the way to the siding, letting all the water from the edge of the roof drain down the siding. I put diverters up to diect water from the roof to the gutter.
