Molding/trim Nail Holes

How do you fill and sand the nail holes in trim/molding? I have tried wood filler (the sandable/paintable type) and it looks horrible. I have tried the painters caulk, and it is not much better. Last night we used some basic JC and it does not look too bad.

Curious what others use for this....

What about it looks...exactly,....makes it look horrible?

FWIW, when it comes to painted trim work, I will use spackle or ready patch on nail holes.

To be honest with you, I am not doing the painting. I only pre-paint the trim, then do the install, then the wife comes around and does the filling and painting. her complaint about the filler was that the paint would not adhere to it. Same with the painters caulk. Honestly, I just use the JC, or spackle, and be done with it. I think that she makes more of it than is necessary.

Lightweight latex spackle, teeny putty knife...just a little dab...no need to sand
