I'm posting this up to give some of you old timers a bit of pleasure.
Here's some old Fredriks lead primer from the early 1980s. Bought this quart in about 1984, used a quarter of the can, and had the rest sitting around all this time. The oil has darkened. IIRC the price on the can is about eight bucks and some change (or was it $6?). This is an artist quality primer made to prime artists' canvases. But back in the day day, artists also commonly used Dutch Boy brand white lead paint to do their priming with. Simple ingredients.
This primer is no longer produced by this same manufacturer, although they are still in business. A comparable product these days cost about $85/quart!
I primed some canvases last summer with this stuff. There's just nothing that handles like lead paint .. it's in a class by itself in that regard. Such a fascinating material and n exciting tactile indulgence.
