mismatched finish

This is a newer house and has a knockdown finish applied to all the walls. I am finishing the basement and I am using just a thick coat of Kilzit, for a light texture, my problem is that the walls around the stairwell are knockout and the walls in the basement have little texture. The walls in the stairwell only extend to the bottom of the basement floor joists so where the walls meet I will have a texture problem. Aside from removing the texture in the stairwell, which I will do if necessary, is there any way to make this transition look right?

Anytime there is texture involved and you are doing something to TRY and match, well, it won't. No matter how hard you try, there is almost no way to match the technique, conditions, compound used, etc. to match what's already there. A skilled drywaller can come very close. Your best option may be to remove the texture in the stairwell instead of experimenting with different techniques to match the texture that's already there.

Maybe try some piece of moulding to separate the two.
