metal fence

We built a fence: pipe about 2" in diameter. We did initial priming with Osfo (sp) and a good quality oil based paint , Coronado. Within 1 1/2 yrs. paint is peeling and completely faded. Any suggestions on different paint? Did we do anything wrong?

Hi, I'm not familiar with Osfo.

I am guessing the pipe is galvanized, if so, I would have cleaned the pipe with an etching solution, like Peso, then applied a primer specifically designed for galvanized metals and/or aluminum. The stuff I use is called Galv-alum, made by Dunn-Edwards, it is thick and nasty.

I would not recommend an oil base paint for this application. In fact, we are getting to the point of not using ANY oil base paints for exterior work, the new latex formulas are far superior for longevity and color/sheen retention.
