makeshift paint sprayer?

I've got to paint/stain an older wooden playset. It doesn't have to be perfect. Is there anything cheap and easy I can use as a sprayer, where I can just dump in stain/poly/paint and spray it on? Maybe something with a pump like a weed-killer sprayer?

You could use a pump sprayer as you say. I'm no spraying expert, but you won't get great results using a pump sprayer. and you'd probably have to back brush it to get it to penetrate well and look even. It would save some time in applying the stain, yes.

A weenie roller and back brushing will be about your fastest cheap solution.
As Arc said - with a bug sprayer you will still need to brush it in.
Sometimes you just got to lay yer ears back and do it. Once you get a feel for it it moves right along, but there is no stain cannon that will take the work out of it.
