Linen cloth over plaster walls and ceilings

My house is really old and has linen cloth on the walls and ceilings. Both walls and ceiling are painted but all the paint is cracked off and the ceiling has ALOT of cracks in the plaster under the cloth. Im afraid to take the cloth off of the ceiling cause I dont know what other problems are under there. Does anyone know anything about this stuff cause Im lost and very nervious to do anything to it?

Call in a REAL plaster guy. It is probably fine under the cloth, but you never know till you remove it.I have removed my share of this stuff and for the most part only needed minor repairs, but.

That linen cloth is Sanitest. It's just old wallpaper, which comes off like a breeze. Old plaster does have a tendency to spider crack (varicose vein look). If the walls are badly spidered, you could call a wallpaper guy to put liner on the walls, which you then prime, spackle the seams, and paint. That treatment will make the walls look like brand new drywall. But, you'll still have to repair the major stress cracking. Or, as chris said, call a plaster guy if you want to maintain the old, original look. Once all the paper is removed, you might find the plaster, as a whole, is not that bad.
