Lead Paint
I have lead paint on the outside of most of my windows (outside of lower sash, upper sash and exterior sill). It is old and cracked. I am eventually going to replace the windows. I put some Zinsser BIN Primer on one of the windows to stop the paint from flaking off and also to seal any dust from the paint. (we have young children in the house). This is temporary and seems to hold it together fairly well.

My question is: Is it better to use a lead paint encapsulant than a primer?

Also, is it necessary to wear a dust mask with a ventilator while painting? I am think some flakes may come off but it will be saturated with paint, which should hold down dust.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Perhaps you should call an Abatement Contractor to get the correct information pertinent to your situation...................................:thumb sup:

The dust is what is dangerous so if you feel anything you are doing is kicking up the dust, put on a mask. Primer and paint is usually sufficent in most locations for encapsulation, but you can always check with your local government or EPA.
