1. First clean walls. Vinegar and Water mix works great on wood.
2. Prime walls with all purpose primer. This will help cover knots and even out surface and make your final coat look nice. If your pine is already painted you can skip the primer. Paint store will tint your primer. Helps with less final paint coats.
3. Use paint of your choice to finish.

If it is new pine, all has to be sealed first. BIN will do it and you need it for the knots anyhow. Otherwise, a mixture of 1:1 PROCESSED not raw lindseed oil and mineral spirits will work as well as anything. Let the solvents evaporate, sand any surfaces that checked in the process, than proceed with BIN.

Note that BIN has a high alcohol content so make sure you have more than adequate ventilation.

If these walls were finished with a clear finish like vanish or polyurethane they will need to be sanded, then cleaned, then primed with the primer above. You will probably find this to be the most expensive primer on the shelf but because it is a stain blocker it will keep the knots from bleeding thru your paint.
