kitchen painting questions

fix what?

i,m remodeling my 1920 kitchen
and getting ready to paint the walls,trim soon
the walls will have one color and trim a different color
i,m leaving the old cabinets on the sink side of the wall and will just paint them. the left and right cabinets with a window in between extent all the way up to the ceiling and will have a wooded trim
for the walls i plan to use a eggshell paint primer combo and semi gloss for the trim paint primer combo
my question is should the cabinets be the same color as the walls or trim ?
my kitchen is currently all white or should i paint everything one color?
the base cabinets that i will be using is the UN finish oak (cheapest)
again should i paint them or stain them ?

Never use a paint and primer in one!

lots of companies are saying that their paint is a paint and primer in one when its exactly the same as the old stuff just getting on the band wagon. what type of paint do you plan to go with? so your saying half the kitchen cabinets are white and the other half is unfinished oak?? typically i would say to stain the wood but you need to match with what you have so seal it with a sealer/primer. you dont have to paint your cabinets the same color as the trim but its probably the easiest thing to do since your already painting trim with a white semi gloss and if you want to stick with the paint. all depends on the look your going for. and ya go with an eggshell for the walls. whatever you do stay away from behr paint. stay away from home depot for paint. go to an actual paint store to get your paint.

the ceiling is an older painted drywall and the walls are 1920 plaster
do i really need to use primer on the walls?
i know i do need to prime the trim work
i,m not sure but i think the trim was painted latex over an oil base paint

well i have seen modern kitchens that has painted and stained cabs
the one side cabinet had long glass doors that came down to about five inches from the counter top
so i remove the doors and shorten the sides of the cabinet so i have room to prepare food ,it's now a shelf
i won't use behr paint, i like valspar

you have a serious problem if indeed you have latex over oil without proper prep work first

Just my opinion but I like a semi gloss in baths and kitchens simply because of the washability. Think kitchen grease splatters, dishwater splatters, food splatters and so on. Usually with a kitchen the cabinets sink and appliances break it up so it don't look shiny.
