Joint Compound Vs. Spackle

I used to think that Joint Compound and Spackle were interchangable. I just read somewhere that Spackle should be used for small holes, Nail holes etc, and JC for larger applications. I have a wall that needs a "skim coat" to even it out for painting. Shoudl I use JC or Spackle? Or is there another Alternative?

Thanks!

Not the same thing/interchangable

You'll want to use Joint Compound for skim coats

I suggest a light weight joint compound.

Skim Coat? Joint compound... be sure your water does not have iron content.

As already mentioned; Joint compound for anything larger than a penny sized issue.
