ideas for painting an old bookshelf

Just bought a home with an old bookshelf/entertainment center built in the wall. It's currently painted white and I want to give it a walnut or mahogany stain look. Any ideas?

Unless you strip the paint right off, which is very difficult and labor intensive, you will have to try a faux-wood technique.

I'd consider just painting it a colour you like

Thanks ARC. I know I'm not patient enough for that and I'm not even sure what type of wood it is.
