I hate popcorn

Looking for an option to repair a section of a popcorn ceiling. The area that the popcorn had to be removed is about 3' X 3', I tried one of those cans of popcorn repair ( was around $12) for the can and it did not even make a dent? Maybe I just got a bad can of this stuff, but it felt full when I started, I will need way too many cans @ $12 for this to possibly work.
I do not want to scrape the whole ceiling, but there has to another to patch this stuff. Is there a way to use dry wall compound and some how roll it out to look like the popcorn?
any ideas?
