How to protect carpet when painting baseboard?

I plan to paint the baseboard in several rooms. What is the best way to protect the carpet?

Use a 12"-14" wide taping knife and slide it between the carpet & the baseboard.
Push the handle down towards the carpet and you can get your brush in there without touching the carpet.

The 12" knife method works, make sure to wipe any wet paint off the knife occasionally.

I also like to run 1.5" masking tape around the carpet. It scrunches the tuft down and when you pull it up the carpet comes back up.
