How many gallons?
I'm painting my daughter's bedroom (10x11). The color on two walls is almost black. So, I'll need to prime and prime again (at least). What's a good rule of thumb for how many gallons for a room of this size?

If it was me I would get a gallon of primer tinted to the color you want and then a gallon of the finish paint. Start with the 2 black walls, then the other 2 walls and then you may have enough to cover the 2 black walls again.
You can also just get paint if the walls are in good shape. Latex Paint will stick to Latex Paint all day long. 2 gallons of either Benjamin Moore Pro Spec or Sherwin Williams Promar 200. Both will go on thin but they are supposed to as they are really meant for multiple coats. |

Why multiple coats of primer? My understanding is that the primer is to help the paint "stick" to the wall. I'd do a coat of tinted primer & two coats of paint.

The primer is more for covering a color in this situation. A clean wall will usually not "NEED" primer as latex will stick to latex.

You have 336 sqft of wall to be covered the average coverage for 1 gallon of paint is 300 to 400 sqft for the first coat. Certain colors do require multiple coats to turn out right. I've found most reds as an example tend to require 3 coats even with high quality paints. Paint quantities are determined by amount of square footage to be covered and amount covered per coat by product to be used. There is no x amount of gallons per x type of wall or room formula.
