how to make paneling darker

Hi all,

We bought an old Tudor home and the panelling was stained a very ugly color. It almost looks some sort of translucent paint. I would like to know if there is a way that I could darken the color without having to to strip all the old stuff. Someone told me I could clean it well and then rub some sort of gel on the wood. Another person said something about a wax that you can use over finished wood to change the color of the stain.

I am so confused. Ideas, please>
